Unruly News & Updates

March 2005
With the Board elections behind us (with mixed results) it is time for Team Unruly to focus on current issues affecting the ESUHSD schools. We intend to keep hammering away at incompetence, and report on how the staff at various schools are coping with the chaos. It is now obvious to more than a few Team Unruly adherents (our numbers are growing daily) that the decisions made by the Board and the Superintendent are arbitrary, vindictive, and destructive.

IN THIS ISSUE:

2500 Layoffs in the State of California: Guess Who's Responsible for 20% of Them?

This just in: the ESUHSD notified over 750 employees, including tenured staff, that they would be laid off for the coming school year. While the district "assures" the media that most of these teachers will be hired back, the level of trust between employees and management is so low that there might not be anyone returning to teach in the East Side.

Right before we went to press with this month’s edition, the Metro ran an article on Board President Herrera’s second visit with the Andrew Hill staff. At that meeting, Herrera played the diplomatic politician, reading letters of support for Zendejas to the disgruntled staff.

But not every administrator buys into the governor’s plans for California’s public schools. The unintentional consequence of this move has created a battle line dividing pro and anti-public education administrators.

A Comic Moment at the State of the District Address

In an effort to celebrate the positive, Board President Herrera gave every school an award in a thinly guised attempt to pump life into the declining morale. But the site administrators subtly set the tone for the afternoon’s ceremony.

The audit doesn’t look good. A history of fiscal mismanagement seems endemic. The parcel tax didn’t pass. 136.8 jobs lie in the balance. The time is right to . . . file a lawsuit against your colleagues?

Disturbing Patterns: The History We're Doomed to Repeat Part I

The crackerjack research unit of Team Unruly has spent the past few months combing the archives of alternative media sources from around the country. Our goal is to prove through a preponderance of evidence that ESUHSD Superintendent Esperanza Zendejas has an established history that validates the lack of confidence ESUHSD employees, students and parents have in her leadership.

No Quick Fixes: Here's One: Dump the Information Minister!

Last month as Team Unruly prepared the February edition of The Advocate, we noticed that the Information Minister had been awfully quiet for over six weeks. A discussion followed about writing an editorial offering our speculations on why the love for Zendejas seemed to have run dry.
