The Lemon Pirouette: Fall Administrative Changes

East Side Union High School District interim-Superintendent Bob Nunez announced in mid-September the following principal changes: Wendy Gudalawicz resigned, Carol Blackerby would return to serve as Independence High School’s interim principal. Then she was moved to Oak Grove High School to serve as the interim-principal replacing Geraldine Forte, who moved to the district office. Oak Grove’s Rich Frias was sent to James Lick High School as the principal, to replace Bill Rice, who was sent to Independence to replace Carol Blackerby.

The Last Word on the Zendejas Departure: The Evergreen Valley Times

Just when we thought we were finished talking about Zendejas and her legacy of love, we stumbled across this Evergreen Valley Times article. For those who think the East Side trustees were glad to see her go, take a look at Craig Mann’s telling comments: “Dr. Zendejas cleaned up the corruption she inherited, placed the district on sound financial footing—saving the district from bankruptcy. She raised expectations and test scores, rid the district of ineffective personnel and led the district with integrity and honesty. I’m confident that she’ll land on her feet with a better employer, one that will respect and appreciate her. … It’s certainly the district’s loss, not hers.”

An Unruly Perspective on the Schwarzenegger Education Initiatives: The Despotic Carpetbagger Paradigm

Over the next month Californians will be asked to vote on three “education reform” initiatives backed by a governor whose approval rating hovers almost halfway below the number of people who believe in UFOs.

Despotic Carpetbagger Paradigm and Superintendent Compensation: Vote NO on 76

In early September, Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed a bill recognizing gay marriages. A number of op-ed critics chastised the governor for vetoing the legislation, but nobody seemed to catch the hypocrisy in his response to the press. When asked why he vetoed the bill, his press secretary told reporters that he vetoed the bill out of respect for the will of the people. He cited the passage of Proposition 22, the “protection of marriage act,” as the basis for his decision. The press statement went on to say “We cannot have a system where the people vote and the legislature derails that vote.”

Kiko's in the Carpetbag! An Unruly Action Alert!

Stop the presses and fire up the email! We just received word through the grapevine that former East Side superintendent and professional despotic carpetbagger Esperanza Zendejas applied for a superintendent’s position in Riverside County. AND SHE MADE IT INTO THE FINAL ROUND!

Farewell, Olive Branch: A Quick Update on the Andrew Hill Cessesion Movement

On October 20, the ESUHSD board of trustees voted unanimously against Hill’s bid to convert to a charter. All eyes are on Hill as they prepare to regroup and decide on their next move. The charter petition is a bold and understandably controversial move, the source of lively debate and thoughtful discussion in faculty lounges throughout Santa Clara County.

The topic of discussion over the next few weeks will also be on the arrogance of the Board of Trustees. The post-board decision Mercury News article gives a little insight into the district dysfunction behind the cession move. Craig Mann, East Side’s most polarizing trustee, claims “The petition has ‘some gaps that have failure written all over them.’"

The Kiko Awards: October 2005

Last month we debuted this feature and the response has been nothing short of phenomenal. It took a little longer than expected to send out the actual award, but as we write this we’re pretty sure superintendent William Bragg is either ripping the envelope to shreds or scouring eBay for a suitable second-hand frame. We got a nod for our efforts from Cupertino’s teacher-driven PAC. Friends of the Advocate have received requests to endorse candidates in Cupertino’s upcoming election, but we’re not really in the business of endorsing anyone. We’re more the people who’ll tell you who not to vote for.

Extending Tenure + Eliminating Due Process X Despotic Carpetbagger Paradigm = Mass Exodus: Why You Should Vote NO on Proposition 74

Phil Yost, inefficacious opiner for the San Jose Mercury News, recently argued that the general CTA position claiming Schwarzenegger’s special election was a waste of money should be sufficient in persuading the public to vote no on his initiatives instead of the Chicken Little “sky is falling” line that union busting propositions silence teacher voices. He used proposition 74 for his example, and postulated a mere two differences between the law as it stands now and the changes that will occur if 74 passes.

Did You Know? The October Surprise!

Did you know the East Side Union High School District sponsored another Parent Empowerment Conference last month? Did you know the spirit of Kumbaya pervaded the event? Word has it more than one board member and a few administrators decided to attend and mend fences with the voting body politic. Did you know there’s a board election next November?

A Seven Year Legacy: The Despotic Carpetbagger Paradigm Case Against Proposition 75

Californians have a nasty habit of voting against their best interests, and one could argue the initiative process perpetuates this peculiar behavior. The well-intentioned voter looking to cut a little bureaucracy and save a tax dollar or two, persuaded by an organized and grotesquely-funded “Yes on whatever” lobby, casts an affirming vote for a ballot measure that cost millions to get on the ballot and millions more in the ensuing legal challenge that ultimately proves the initiative unconstitutional. Call it “The 187 Phenomenon.”
